Masai Marathon

Actor Edward Norton runs the NYC marathon with his Masai friends in order to raise money for the Masai Wilderness Conservation Trust. A fantastic example of combining athleticism, social responsibility, and a fantastic web page.

Race for Recovery

Triathlete Todd Crandell spent 13 years of his life struggling with drugs and alcohol. He found sobriety through triathlon races, and now organizes his own half-Ironman distance triathlon in Michigan (in which my wife placed 2nd!). I was lucky enough to run with him for a few miles during the Detroit Marathon. Competitive athleticism is a great way to fight (or channel?) addiction.  The documentary Running with Demons tells the story of Todd’s journey from addict to Ultraman competitor (318 miles).

And some blogs from some friends that have recently became parents/work in public health/pretend to be athletes:

books and baby

both parents in grad school and a baby?  ouch: “my husband and i are both graduate students; i am a j.d. student and he is a history phd student. we live in books, quite literally. upon entering our home, immediately to your left is a wall of books. throughout the apartment, you will find more books. and somewhere in that mess is our little surprise baby, who arrived our second year of graduate studies. this blog chronicles the joys and trials of two graduate students raising a little girl amidst a sea of books.”

Great blog on raising a young boy, with another on the way.   God bless her: “I’m a friend, wife, mommy, student, teacher, Montessorian, cook, crafter, philosopher, artist, IKEA-ista, etc.”

I’ll be sharing some thoughts here about my journeys during my season in India.”

Parenting 2.0
